UberEats is set to begin delivering marijuana for the first time ever on Monday — and will launch the service exclusively in Toronto, Canada.
Uber is partnering with online cannabis marketplace Leafly, which has lined up three Toronto area retailers to kicking off the program. The retailers’ staff, rather than Uber drivers, will handle the dropoff, the companies said on Sunday.
Customers jonesing for weed in Toronto can open the UberEats app, select their choice of pot from a new cannabis menu and get it delivered to their door as long as they can prove they are sober and at least 19 years old when the driver shows up, in accordance with Canadian law.
“We are partnering with industry leaders like Leafly to help retailers offer safe, convenient options for people in Toronto to purchase legal cannabis for delivery to their homes, which will help combat the illegal market and help reduce impaired driving,” Lola Kassim, General Manager of Uber Eats Canada said in a statement.
Ontario residents have been allowed to order cannabis products via UberEats since November, but the law required customers to pick up their purchases.
“Leafly has been empowering the cannabis marketplace in Canada for more than four years and we support more than 200 cannabis retailers in the [Toronoto area],” Leafly CEO, Yoko Miyashita said in a statement. “We are thrilled to work with Uber Eats to help licensed retailers bring safe, legal cannabis to people across the city.”
The partnership is being promoted as a safety benefit to reduce the number of people who drive after getting high. One study from Public First shows that about 14% of users drive within two hours of consuming cannabis.
